Let me tell you, there is nothing like a destination wedding in Key West! These gorgeous Floridian islands are the southernmost point in the US and offer tropical beauty combined with historical and architectural charm.
Getting married in Key West is a match made in heaven for free-spirited couples who love the beaches and want a fun beachfront ceremony (shoes are optional!) in a romantic and tropical setting. I can highly recommend Key West personally as it holds a space in my heart — my grandparents lived there and I’m considering having my own honeymoon there!
If the beach is your happy place like it is for me, then here are my top tips for planning a romantic Key West wedding or elopement that’s beautiful and stress free!
Try to book your venue as far in advance as you can, as destination weddings in Key West are so popular! Start by thinking about your preferred wedding style and vibe — are you all about dancing on the beach, barefoot and fancy-free? Or, do you prefer the luxury of a more formal resort or restaurant?
Key West caters to just about everyone, so you’re sure to find a place you love. When checking out venues, keep in mind how many guests are likely to attend so you can find a space that will suit the size of your group. However, one great thing about destination weddings — you and all of your guests are on vacation, so time doesn’t really matter! If it works out cheaper to host your wedding on a Sunday or Monday, go for it!
If you want your wedding to be legally binding (and it’s totally ok if you don’t!), you’ll need to first obtain a Florida marriage license.
It’s good news though, as you don’t need to live in Florida to get married here and the process to get a marriage license is pretty straightforward. To do this, you’ll both need to show your ID and your Social Security numbers at the county clerk’s office and pay a small fee.
There’s a three-day waiting period before you can get married, but this is waived if you take Florida’s online premarital prep course.
Next, it’s time to find your wedding vendors! Look for a local wedding planner who knows Key West well as your first hire, as they can likely recommend other amazing local vendors, like your officiant, florist, and caterer. Or, you can also ask your venue if they have preferred vendors. Otherwise, reading reviews online is the best way to find the best vendors who will suit your wedding vision.
If you’re not local to Key West, 100% it’s essential to hire a wedding planner who is! They’ll play such a big role in organizing your day and will be such a stress relief for busy couples.
With golden sunshine year round, there’s no right or wrong time for your celebrations here! However, the best time to get married in Key West is generally February through May, as it’s less humid, less likely to rain, and the temperatures can be more pleasant.
And while rain showers are usually over quickly in Key West, talk to your venue if you’re planning an outdoor celebration. They’ll have a backup plan to ensure your wedding is still perfect — and, good news, rain and clouds can add such a romantic, beautiful element to your wedding photos!
Last but not least, reserve a block of rooms for your guests, either at the hotel where you’re hosting your wedding or just nearby. You might want to work with a travel agent on putting together Key West wedding packages, including flights and hotels. Often, hotels will give a small discount as you’re reserving a large number of rooms — so be sure to ask!
If your budget allows, you might want to arrange a fun surprise to be waiting in each guest room, like a bottle of wine or snacks you know they’ll love. Or, plan on a super special welcome event for your guests, like a dolphin watching sunset cruise or a private beachfront BBQ.
